INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING ORAL SURGERY
For 3 days following surgery, DO NOT Spit, Vigorously Rinse OR Use a Straw! Do Not drive for one day after surgery (if you were sedated) or as long as you are taking pain medication. Do Not take your medications on an empty stomach. Eat clear soups ( u can soak bread, crackers or croutons in the soup), Jell-O, applesauce, sherbet, pudding, ice cream, yogurt ( For Patients that had IV Sedation Non-Dairy for the 1st day – coconut milk, soy milk or almond milk products are ok). If you take your medication on an empty stomach there is a possibility of fainting. Also, refrain from sudden movements (such as getting up to fast from a sitting or lying position). Bleeding Slight oozing from the sockets may last 1 to 3 days. The blood clots will also tinge the saliva causing it to be reddish in color, especially the first 24 hours. If excessive bleeding occurs, place a gauze pad directly on the bleeding area and close your mouth firmly so that pressure is applied for at least 30 minutes. Replace the gauze approximately every 30 minutes until the bleeding has been controlled. A moistened tea bag can be placed over the site if gauze is not available. (If there is no more active dripping of bleeding from the surgery site/s, please discontinue use of gauze applications). Pain Pain from surgical procedures in the highly sensitive oral cavity can be controlled by taking the prescribed medications as directed. Unless otherwise instructed begin the first dose immediately so that the pain medication can be in full effect before the local anesthetic wears off. If you notice symptoms of a dry socket (sudden throbbing pain 3 days after surgery) call our office. Once, home you can apply ice packs to the outside of the face for 20 minutes on 20 minutes off for the next 24 hours. Maximum swelling can be expected on the second or third day. Bone Grafting Patients ** If you had a bone graft procedure** You must be very careful of the bone graft site. Please DO NOT spit, touch (ie: press with your finger, tongue or any object), eat, massage, open mouth wide or brush in that area. You are to refrain from all these activities until the doctor tells you otherwise. ** You can rinse by rotation of the head, BUT please do not swish vigorously for 1 week** Oral Hygiene Rinse with warm salt water (1/4 teaspoon of salt in a 4 oz glass of warm water) after each meal for 1 week starting the day after surgery. Do NOT spit the water out of your mouth. Instead, let the water “fall out” of your mouth. Begin gently brushing the teeth in 24 hours after each meal. Diet Try not to miss a single meal, beginning with soups/liquids and slowly advance your diet to soft foods as tolerated. If you are able to tolerate soft foods, then advance your diet to solid foods. NO DAIRY PRODUCTS (if you were sedated) for the first day from surgery. Smoking DO NOT SMOKE for 2 weeks after surgery. Smoking greatly delays healing and promotes a dry socket and infection.Español
